The issue of grass cutting in estates outside the old town council area in Castlebar in the new municipal district was raised at the Castlebar Municipal District this week. Fianna Fáil councillor Lisa Chambers said that she had been contacted by a number of people in the Kiltimagh area wondering when it would be done. However, she was informed by senior executive engineer for Mayo County Council, Anne Sweeney, that with the changeover in local government areas in the middle of the year the budgets that had been set at the start of the year did not allow for cutting at present and it would have to be allocated by the councillors in their budget for next year. Ms Sweeney also said a number of estates had been taken over in the Castlebar town area late last year after the budget had been agreed by the council, and there was not money budgeted this year to take care of them too.

Where did it all go wrong is what the Fine Gael party faithful will be trying to figure out over the next few weeks as they saw their seats in the county town drop from four to two over the weekend. One man who won’t be asking that question is Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne who topped the poll with an amazing 2,921 votes, a massive 1,210 first preference votes over the quota of 1,711. From not long after the boxes were opened and spilled across the counting tables in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar early on Saturday morning, there was never any doubt that Kilcoyne was going to top the poll, it was only a matter of by how much. When he was elected on the first count, he was the first councillor in Ireland elected in this year’s local elections, but he had to wait until the early hours of Tuesday morning for the official declaration of election after the recount of the Castlebar papers had been concluded. Castlebar local area election candidate Lisa Chambers has organised a public meeting to discuss the decline of town centres over the recent years. The election hopeful will be hosting the meeting in the Welcome Inn Hotel on Monday week, March 10, where Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen will give a talk on the party’s Streets Ahead policy document. The meeting will also be addressed by local business people and a representative from the Chamber of Commerce on the issue.

Castlebar Electoral Area candidate, Lisa Chambers, has demanded increased support for working families to help them to deal with spiralling childcare costs. The 2011 General Election candidate said: “Unless the issue of childcare costs is addressed, particularly for lower income families, we will see a much greater number of children being cared for through private arrangements. But private childcare is totally unregulated, with no qualifications needed, no inspections, and no specific standards required. We need to ensure that crèches and pre-schools, which are regulated, are affordable options for more families.”
